The narrator, whose name is unknown, is a lonely old man. Étymologiste, he spent most of his life in books, and has become gradually disillusioned and taciturn. His land lady is his only contact with the outside world. But one day, he is forced raise his two orphaned nephews, Antoine and Jean, aged seven and nine. This intrusion disrupts his life. Never having to deal with children, he feels helpless against these two little boys. Throughout his diary, we follow the evolution of their relationship: their shyness, their budding complicity, their moments of abandon. The old man, with his two little orphans, takes new interest in life.
